During a lunar eclipse, moon falls under the shadow of the earth as it passes directly behind the planet. Hence, sunlight is not able to reach the moon. So, the moon only refracts the light that falls on from earth's atmosphere. The moon appears red in colour and that is why, it is known as Blood Moon.
As per IST, the grahan will start at 11:54 PM on July 27 and from 1:00 AM onward, it will be visible from cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune. Post 2:43 AM, only a partial lunar eclipse will be visible.
Diet rules and myths during lunar eclipse
As per many Ayurveda experts, all the diet rules that exist with regard to the chandra grahan are all myths. It is 100 per cent safe to eat and drink anything you may during the hours of the eclipse. In fact, the mandatory bath after the eclipse is over is also a superstition, say experts.
However, there are certain experts who believe otherwise. "During lunar eclipse, the moon tends to be nearer to the earth, which means there are certain electro-magnetic waves in the river bodies. Moreover, our bodies are made up of 72 percent water, which is why one can experience physiological changes. You could become moody and end up eating a lot of food, which can cause and upset stomach. This is why most experts suggest that one must not eat food during this time as it may take time to digest. Rather pick on lighter foods that may help keep your digestion going strong. You can, otherwise, follow a normal routine as everything else is superstition," told Yogi Anoop, a yoga expert.
According to such experys, lunar eclipse alters the wavelength and intensity of light radiations that exist on earth. Hence, there are certain rules that must be abided by, such as:
- You should stop consuming anything two hours prior to the eclipse.
- Whatever you choose to eat tonight and after the eclipse, it should be light and easy to digest. You can also add spices such as turmeric and tulsi or basil to make the food antibacterial.
- Pregnant women, people who have any health condition that requires them to eat frequently such as diabetes, and elderly are allowed to eat even during an eclipse, however, you must choose light foods and avoid non-vegetarian.
- Don't carry around cooked food during the eclipse as it can absorb the harmful radiation that occurs during the eclipse.
